Abstract
Purpose: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth most common cancer in the U.S. according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and it is the second most common cancer among Latinos in California. Using data from the California Cancer Registry (CCR), we investigated the determinants of CRC incidence and survival including demographic and clinical characteristics of 310,190 CRC cases including 52,667 Latinos living in California and diagnosed during 1995-2017 taking into account subpopulations defined by country of origin. ❧ Methods: Latinos cases were defined according to the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) Hispanic Identification Algorithm (NHIA), which was also used to group cases by country of origin: Mexico (12,922, 53.0%), Caribbean (1,048, 4.3%), Central America (2,525, 10.4%), South America (1,365, 5.6%), and other or unknown origin (6.510, 26.7%). We included 223,191 non-Latino white (NLW) and 25,332 non-Latino black (NLB) CRC cases were included for comparison purposes. Case frequencies, odds ratios (OR) from logistic regression, and hazard ratios (HR) from survival analyses were used to identify any disparities among Latinos, NLB and NLW. A “log (follow-up time)-log (-log survival)” plot and Kaplan-Meier curves were used to test proportional hazard assumption. ❧ Results: Differences were observed for age at diagnosis, socioeconomic status (SES), insurances status, marital status, religion, tumor location, stage, metastasis, treatment status, treatment type, time from diagnosis to treatment, and tumor size among Latinos compared to NLW.
