Description
1 image. Polio shots for children (neg by Clarke - Oxnard), 30 August 1954. Ronald Bergman -- 8 months. Mrs. Rhonda Roberts (head of Polio Ward at General Hospital in Ventura).; Supplementary material reads: "Clarke -- Oxnard; 'Only research will make it possible to perfect a vaccine to permanently safeguard children and adults against polio, but it will take dollers [sic] to do the job,' Mrs. Rhoda Roberts, head of the polio ward at General Hospital in Ventura said this week. Mrs. Roberts said that so far this year the hospital has admitted 19 polio patients ranging from eight months to fifty years of age. Two patients, including a 13 year-old-boy had to be put into respirators. 'To date, Ventura County has been fortunate in that the county hasn't been hit hard,' she said. 'But we don't know what the next fiew [sic] months will bring.' Mrs. Roberts said that the present cases include an eight-month-old child suffering from complete paralysis of the left leg, an 18-month old baby with paralysis of the right arm, and a thirteen-year-old girl with paralysis of the throat. She added happily that all three are 'coming along nicely.' 'But if we are to beat this dreaded disease,' she said, 'we must fight, and the best way is to fight with donations.' In pix from left... no name on nurse at left; Ronald Bergman -- eight months; Mrs. Rhoda Roberts".
