Don Belding (Airport Commissioner); Geoffrey Brown (1st Award Trophy); George Edwards (2nd Award Trophy).; Supplementary material reads: "From: Peg Hereford. Department of Airports. 5800 Avion Drive. Los Angeles 45, Calif. Or 8-1151. For Release Monday, May 20. Nine youthful journalists whose stories on airports and air transportation in their school newspapers won awards in a a city-wide contest sponsored by the Los Angeles Department of Airports are taking classroom bows today. The winners were announced yesterday (Sunday May 19) at the 7th annual Van Nuys Airport Open House when they were guests of honor at the Pilots Round-Up breakfast which also saluted members of the working press who regularly cover aviation news. Airport Commissioner Harry C. Dow made the presentation of trophies and scrolls to the students. First award went to Geoffrey Brown, Audubon Junior High School, for his story 'Advancement in Flying Continue to Amaze Skeptics'. In addition to a personal trophy, Brown won the perpetual trophy for his school. Last year's winning school was Los Angeles High School. Second award trophy was won by George Edwards, Los Angeles High School, for his story 'Giant Strides in Aviation'. Tied for third award trophies were Marion Berg, Peary Junior High School, Gardena, 'Airport - A Place of Excitement and Wonder', and Alan Tucker, James Madison Junior High School, North Hollywood, 'Look to the skies'. Honorable mention scrolls were presented to Judy Andy, Southgate Junior High School; Marilyn Cook, Jerry Harris, and Anne Littler, Bell High School, and Ronald Ball, Northridge Junior High School. A committee from the Aviation Writers Association judged the entries in the Contest."

Description
The Los Angeles Examiner Photographs Collection consists of approximately 1.4 million prints and negatives from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper. It was a daily newspaper, published in the afternoon on weekdays (Herald-Express) and in the morning on weekends (Examiner). The afternoon and morning papers merged in 1962 (Herald Examiner).

Almost every event and individual receiving news coverage in Los Angeles during the period late 1920's to 1961 is represented in the collection. Coverage is broad including crime, sports, society, art, and entertainment. The collection forms part of the Hearst Collection and was a gift from the Los Angeles Herald Examiner Division of the Hearst Corporation in 1978.
The Los Angeles Examiner Negatives Collection (1950-1961) consists of approximately 215,000 4x5-inch negatives from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper.
The Los Angeles Examiner Prints Collection consists of approximately 1.2 million photoprints from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper.
