STRING QUARTET NO. 2 by Jesse Wright-FitzGerald A Musical Score Presented to the FACULTY OF THE USC THORNTON SCHOOL OF MUSIC UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS (COMPOSITION) May 10, 2019 String Quartet No. 2 Mvt. I: The Anguish of Little Things Mvt. II: After the Decimation, A Song Mvt. III: Redemption/Resolution Approx. duration: 15 minutes This is a piece in three movements, that progresses through an emotional journey, each movement attempting to capture a distinctly different state of mind. The first movement is rhythmically driving and has a nasty biting edge to it. It becomes progressively wilder and more frantic until it collapses under its own energy, ending with the high sounds of dying insects vanishing into the night. The second movement is a response to the first. It begins with quiet gestures rising strangely out of a fractured landscape. Gradually, a song appears. A second voice joins the first, and together they sing a song of love and healing. The third movement is in two parts. The first part is contrapuntal, with angular lines fighting one another for primacy. The ensemble begins to play the line in unison with a brash confidence. However, this confidence is short lived as the ensemble hesitates and begins to stumble. The first part ends inconclusively. The second part begins out of stillness, and gradually a multi colored texture emerges. The texture grows in hope and is interrupted by a chorale which reaches for a resolution. Against the texture the cello plays a melody that also reaches for an unseen conclusion. The melody fades, and the texture dies, and the choral rises and falls one final time, yearning for rest but not quite finding it. Until at the last moment, like a whisper, we find absolution. Abstract (if available)
Abstract
This is a piece for string quartet in three movements, that progresses through an emotional journey, each movement attempting to capture a distinctly different state of mind. The first movement (“The Anguish of Little Things”) is rhythmically driving and has a nasty biting edge to it. It becomes progressively wilder and more frantic until it collapses under its own energy, ending with the high sounds of dying insects vanishing into the night. The second movement (“After the Decimation, A Song”) is a response to the first. It begins with quiet gestures rising strangely out of a fractured landscape. Gradually, a song appears. A second voice joins the first, and together they sing a song of love and healing. The third movement (“Redemption/Resolution”) is in two parts.
