Summary
“Since 1990, STEM employment has grown 79% (9.7 million to 17.3 million), and computer
jobs have seen a whopping 338% increase over the same period (Funk, C., Parker, K., Funk, C.,
& Parker, K.).” With the increase in the market, there has been little to no increase in gender
diversity throughout the S.T.E.M work sectors. Equity & Inclusion: The Future of Women in
S.T.E.M video thesis explores the adversity and discrimination women face throughout science,
technology, engineering, and mathematically-based careers. The video thesis examines the
industry landscape, the history of women’s entrance into the S.T.E.M sectors and addresses the
need for inclusivity throughout companies and businesses that shape the future of society.

Throughout the thesis, we explore the historical and current challenges women face throughout
the S.T.E.M industries and what changes need to be made to motivate and encourage girls and
young women to explore S.T.E.M degrees and careers. The goal of this video thesis is to not
only raise awareness of these inclusion issues but to empower women, educators, and
corporations to tackle the problem and lead the way in changing the social norm. This thesis
assesses the barriers that women face when entering the S.T.E.M sectors, the educational
limitations preventing their advancements, the influence that media has on the future of women
in the workforce, and the role that communication plays throughout the various S.T.E.M
industries.
