Description
1 image. Sherman Oaks Candy Cane Lane pageant, 27 November 1953. Barbara Britton (talks to crowd.). (Handout). ; Supplementary material reads: "Los Angeles Examiner. Los Angeles County Tuberculosis & Health Assoc. For immediate release. With Art. Earl Edelen. SUnset 3-5971. 1953-11-28. In the true Christmas spirit of 'giving' instead of 'getting', thousands joined a host of stars at the Candy Cane Lane Pageant in Sherman Oaks last night to support the sale of Christmas Seals in the tuberculosis crusade. 'It's truly a heart-warming sight,' said film and television star Dick Lane, grand marshal of the parade, 'to see so many wonderful people gathered in one place to lend their support to the fight against TB that others less fortunate might have a better Christmas.' Although not the main purpose of the annual event, Christmas Seals were available for those who wished to contribute. Scores of tots came forward to buy Seals with their pennies after visiting Santa and receiving free candy canes. As co-masters of ceremonies, film actor Phil Tully and Dick Lane introduced Gail Storm, honorary mayor of Sherman Oaks, Councilman Earle Baker, Barbara Britton, Bozo the Clown, Ann Robinson, Reed Hadley, Muzzy Marcellino, Jan Clayton, Eric Smith, a director of the Los Angeles County Tuberculosis and Health Association and 10-year-old Jerry McCullough, the Christmas Seal Boy."
