Title Republican, 1952
Description 1 image. Republican, 29 July 1952. Donald Eastvold (Washington State senator). (Handout).; Supplementary material reads: "News Bureau. United Air Lines. Bill O'Hern. MAdison 6-6311. Night: SUnset 1-0147. Illustrated. Washington State Senator Donald of Tacoma, who won national prominence at the Republican convention in his leadership of Eisenhower's fight over the contested southern delegates, arrived in Los Angeles late last night (Tuesday) via United Air Lines to meet with southern California Republicans and to represent 'General Ike' in a television debate with Democrat James Roosevelt. He said, 'I anticipate the topics of greatest interest in our debate will be (1) the difference in methods of selection of candidates at the national conventions -- the Republican method of choosing the most popular man in open election as compared with 'bossism' -- (2) what James Roosevelt has to say about his telegram of July 3, 1948, urging the Democrats to nominate Eisenhower and why he's changed his opinion of the Republican's candidate since then, and (3) how the Democrats can explain past stands of their candidates with the party's platform. He amplified this last by noting that the opposition called for a civil rights program while its candidate for vice president (Sen. Sparkman of Alabama) has a consistent voting record against FEPC, and repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act while its presidential candidate has been in favor of that measure. The Republican candidate for attorney-general in his home state, Eastvold, 32, is the father of five children 'with more on the way'". "Note in pencil: Met by Mildred Younger)".
