Assignment: Dodgers plant 1st tree. L to R: Dick Walsh, Dodger Vice President. Mrs. Carolyn Patterson, Chairman of 'Plant a Tree Week' and bat boy Rene Lachemann. Latin name for tree is Flaxinus Ornus or Flowering Ash. Bat boy holds bat tree (9 & 9) bat with pepper branch tied onto it".; Supplementary material reads: "Ted Schmidt. Publicity. Plant a Tree week. Pacific Telephone. Madison 1-1607. City desk memo ...The Dodgers will plant the first tree in the Chavez Ravine ball-park landscaping on Thursday morning March 9 at 9:30 am. The tree will be an ash -- baseball bats are made from ash. Present will be Dick Walsh, Dodger Vice President, a bat boy in a Dodger uniform with a ball bat and Mrs. Carolyn Patterson, Chairman of Plant a Tree Week. How to get there: Pasadena Freeway, get off at Adobe Street. Curve right over freeway bridge. Right at first road to Chavez Ravine Street. Up Chavez Ravine Road to fork. Take right fork and up steep hill. At top you are at Garabaldi Street. Right and straight ahead to the buildings and the tree. Rene Lachemann. Flaxinus Ornus-- Flowery Ash".

Description
The Los Angeles Examiner Photographs Collection consists of approximately 1.4 million prints and negatives from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper. It was a daily newspaper, published in the afternoon on weekdays (Herald-Express) and in the morning on weekends (Examiner). The afternoon and morning papers merged in 1962 (Herald Examiner).

Almost every event and individual receiving news coverage in Los Angeles during the period late 1920's to 1961 is represented in the collection. Coverage is broad including crime, sports, society, art, and entertainment. The collection forms part of the Hearst Collection and was a gift from the Los Angeles Herald Examiner Division of the Hearst Corporation in 1978.
The Los Angeles Examiner Negatives Collection (1950-1961) consists of approximately 215,000 4x5-inch negatives from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper.
The Los Angeles Examiner Prints Collection consists of approximately 1.2 million photoprints from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper.
