Description
1 image. Sugar man, 16 July 1958. Lawrence R. Partridge (industrial engineer of Hawaiian Sugar Company). (Handout).; Supplementary material reads: "From News Bureau. Pan American World Airways. 'I don't think we'll need any guns', stated Lawrence R. Partridge, industrial engineer of the Hawaiian Sugar Company, when he arrived in Los Angeles from Honolulu via Pan American Airways last night (7/16) enroute to Abadan, Iran. Partridge, of Hilo, Hawaii, is one of 10 members of a survey team of C. Brewer and Company, subcontractors if Ralph M. Parsons Company, who are enroute to Iran to investigate the possibility of installing a 10,000 acre cane sugar plantation and expect to be in the country from two to four years. The Hawaiian Sugar company is a subsidiary of the Brewer company. 'I don't believe we will get involved in the embroiled hot spot because the Iranian Government will probably lend any necessary protection since they originally asked for assistance in this project', according to Partridge. Married and with four and a half year old daughter, Partridge said his wife wasn't too concerned about his trip to the troubled area, and added, 'I enjoyed the trip here immensely since I sat next to Miss Singapore on the plane coming to Los Angeles'. He will leave here for New York July 19 and continue on to Iran via Pan Am. -30-".
