Description
"Legendary California Choreographers" was a concert event that took place on 1998 March 21 and 22 at the UCLA Center for the Performing Arts. The program was dedicated to the choreographers who inspired and enriched the art form, and were based in California for a period in their career. The event was funded in part by the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs, Howard Gilman Foundation, Frederick Dahlquist & Patricia Lambert, Carole & Barry Hirsch, and Joseph A. Tucker Jr. The following pieces are presented in this concert footage: 1) "Incense," (1906) choreography and costume by Ruth St. Denis, with music bhy Harvey Loomis, reconstructed by Karoun Tootikian, constume reconstructed by Milly Colahan, and restaging performed by Nancy Colahan, 2) "Two Ecstatic Themes: A. Circular descent and B. Pointed ascent," (1931) choreography and costume by Doris Humphrey, music by Metner and Melipiero, directed by Ernestine Stodelle in arrangement with Dance Notation Bureau and restaging performed by Risa Steinberg, 3) "On My Mother's Side: Great Grandfather Walcott, Great Grandfather Hoffman, Grandmother Hoffman, Grandfather Hoffman, Aunt Jessie, Sonny," (1939) choreography by Charles Weidman, restaged and directed by Peter Hamilton, music by Lionel Nowak, played by Lynn Haesseler, text by Billy Archibald, narrated by Don Liberto, costume by James Berton Harris, after Pauline Lawrence, researched and performed by Douglas Nielsen, 4) "Michio Ito Suite," choreography and costume by Michio Ito, restaging directed by Taeko Furusho, costumes reconstructed by Roslyn Moore. This suite included the following pieces: "Symphonic Etudes," (1928) performed to Schmann's "Symphonic Etudes, op 13, Var. II", "Prayer" performed by Janet Eilber, and "Greek Warrior" performed by Nancy Colahan, "Pizzicati, (1916) performed to Delibes' "Pizzicati from Sylvia", performed by Risa Steinberg, "Tango," (1927) performed to "Tango in D" by Isaac Albeniz, performed by Bonnie Oda Homsey, and "Tone Poem I and II," (1928) performed to music by Kosaku Yamada's "Tone #1 and Tone #8", performed by Nancy Colahan and Janet Eilber. 5) "The Antenna Bird, A Figment of Natural Science," (1956) recreated from choreography by Eve Gentry by Michele Larsson assisted by Nancy Colahan, music for this recreation by Michael Dotolo and Joseph Weber, costume recreated by Milly Colahan, recreation performed by Nancy Colahan, 6) "Evocation," (1953) recreated from choreography by Carmelita Maracci, music by Isaac Albeniz, reconstruction premiere for Los Angeles Dance Theater by Victoria Koenig, 1998 March, guest pianist Althea Waites, researched and performed by Victoria Koenig, 7) "Debut at the Opera," (recreation premiere by Los Angeles Dance Theater, 1995 February), recreation based on notes by Agnes de Mille, music from Delibes' Coppelia, scored by Allen Krantz, costume reconstructed by George Bergeron, researched and performed by Janet Eilber.
