Description
Photograph of a model. "Zoning limit must be lifted to make way for these giants -- Model includes 20-story hotel, 24-story office building, 22-story apartment. -- A $30,000,000 'city within a city' is scheduled to be built on Wilshire Boulevard within a year, it was announced yesterday by New York financier George W. Warnecke and Charles Luckman, whose firm has been retained as designers. -- 'We have negotiated a contract to sign a 99-year lease with the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles at $250,000 a year,' Warnecke said. -- However, before a lease can be signed, the present six-story zoning limit must be changed to enable Luckman's plans for a 24-story office building to get past the [...] some 3400 cars, a restaurant, swimming pools and other recreational areas. In the center of the buildings there will also be a commercial block to house a bank, drugstore and shops. -- 'The center is probably the first of its kind in the United States which will combine offices, commercial and residential structures in a planned community,' Warnecke said. Walls of the four major buildings will be of glass." -- Examiner clipping attached to verso, dated 21 August 1959.
