Description

Photograph of a drawing. "A long-familiar landmark is now in the process of modernization with construction underway on what has been know for approximately 41 years as the Loew's State Building on the south west corner of 7th and Broadway. When the rejuvenation has been completed, the structure will be rechristened The State Building. The initial work will modernize 12 shops on the ground level. With the completion of this phase, the remainder of the 12-story building will be re-worked in a process which will give it an aluminum sheathed exterior divided between windows with vertical panels of porcelain enamel. A new entrance and lobby will also be provided. Over $350,000." -- typed note attached to verso, dated 19 September 1955. "Moderninzation of the United Building" -- caption below drawing. Depicted in the drawing are businesses: Hudson's Jeweler's, Gallen Kamp's, Hamilton Diamond Company, Green's.; Streetscape. Horizontal photography.

Description The Los Angeles Examiner Photographs Collection consists of approximately 1.4 million prints and negatives from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper. It was a daily newspaper, published in the afternoon on weekdays (Herald-Express) and in the morning on weekends (Examiner). The afternoon and morning papers merged in 1962 (Herald Examiner).

Coverage is broad including crime, sports, society, art, and entertainment. The collection forms part of the Hearst Collection and was a gift from the Los Angeles Herald Examiner Division of the Hearst Corporation in 1978.

The Los Angeles Examiner Negatives Collection (1950-1961) consists of approximately 215,000 4x5-inch negatives from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper.

The Los Angeles Examiner Prints Collection consists of approximately 1.2 million photoprints from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper.
