With the help of many women, San Francisco Women's Centers, a non-profit organization, is attempting to buy a building that would house women's organizations, a performance space, library, coffeehouse, crisis counseling center, health clinic, child care, etc. All proceeds from the film series benefit will go to the women's building efforts. McKenna Theater is wheelchair accessible.

cause, in the few months we had to search out films, we could not locate a single film about a Chicana writer, a Latina
writer, an Asian American woman writer, a contemporary lesbian-feminist writer. Thus, in the middle of the Film
Festival, one of these groups will have a poetry reading — live!
One purpose of the film series is to point out a lack of films which portray minority women affirmatively, such as in
lead roles. Films that have been made about women are often from a male perspective, ranging from Grandma Moses
treated like a wooden puppet trotted back and forth in front of a camera — barely allowed to say a word in a twenty-two
minute film supposedly about her — to male narratives seeming to intrude upon the sensitive presence of a woman’s
unrehearsed voice. We decided not to show films which treat women in romantic or callous ways. We were looking for
images of honesty, compassion, vulnerability, courage, unaffectedness, imagination, and intelligence.

Allie Light: ‘‘Possum Trot.’’ This is the San Francisco premiere of a
film about folk artist Calvin Black’s art legacy protected by his widow
in the Mojave Desert.
The filmmakers will facilitate discussion of their work with audience.

Discussion facilitator: Gilda Grillo, Brazilian woman who filmed and
recorded Amazon tribes and knows their matriarchal mythologies.
Yolande Du Luart: ‘‘Angela Davis: Portrait of a Revolutionary.’’
‘‘Filmed by U.C.L.A. students during the time she was dismissed as a
philosophy instructor on the grounds of her membership in the
Communist Party.’’
“Union Maids.’’ In-depth interviews with three women who organized
for their unions.
Facilitator: Karen Brodine, member of Radical Women and organizer
of a union where she works.

woman-identified — only partially capture the truths of women’s lives; a few are out of date and have become historical
documents of the time they were made. Not enough filmmakers are free of sexist stereotyping, or have the vision and
insight, or the financial resources to make women’s reality come alive on screen. There is a crying need for women
filmmakers to correct, cinematically, insults and inaccuracies regarding women.
For the Women Writers Film Festival, as many films as possible will be shown in a day to survey the range of impres-
sive films available in this realm. The politics, the impact of the messages behind the messages of these films often
moved and interested us as much as the women’s lives and writings. From reminiscenses ala the Bloomsbury Group on
the brilliance and instability of Virginia Woolf to the casting-away of all commentary in the terribly touching home
movies and down-home poetry in the Ruth Stone film, the Women Writers Film Festival will bring tears and cheers —a
day of strong-worded women, live and on film.
