Are You At Risk

L.A. County Declares State of Health Alert
Syphilis Outbreak

e A surge of primary and secondary syphilis infections has been reported since March 6
e All cases were men who reported having sex with male partners

You need to know that...

¢ Syphilis can go unnoticed and be easily spread
¢ Syphilis and other STD’s increase the spread of HIV
e There is a 2 to 5 fold increased risk of acquiring HIV infection when syphilis is present
¢ Co-infection of HIV and syphilis may complicate the treatment of both diseases;

the risk of syphilis treatment failure increases in the presence of HIV

e People with HIV and syphilis may be at higher risk for neurosyphilis

¢ A single painless lesion may develop within 3-4 weeks of infection
e Using a condom correctly and consistently can reduce the risk of STDs, including HIV

You can take action...

¢ Syphilis is a highly treatable disease
e The spread of syphilis can be stopped by treating all recent
sex partners before it can be spread to others

You can get tested...
