BY ARTHUR J. BRESSAN, JR. @ A FILM AND VIDEO WORKSHOP INC. PRESEN TATION.
A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of
seeing a work print of Arthur Bressan’s new
film, Buddies. Put together in record time on
a minuscule budget, Buddies is the first film
about AIDS; but I’d hate to see it labeled
merely as ‘‘an AIDS movie,’’ because it also
happens to be one of the precious few works
in which gay characters really act like the
gay men I know. Bressan doesn’t have Hec-
tor Babenco’s compositional eye, and he cer-
tainly doesn’t have the financing of any of
the other directors under review here. What
he has instead (and, for me, in a way, it’s
more laudable at this point) is an acute sense
of the daily realities of gay life.
With a spare, even Spartan style, Bressan
traces the relationship of two thoroughly
normal human beings who happen to be gay
(one of whom is dying of AIDS), and by the
end of the film, this constitutionally skeptical
reviewer was sobbing uncontrollably over
the state of all mankind. Buddies is simple
but exceptionally moving, and something
tells me that on a big screen it will be even
more so.
