A Harvey Milk Institute-sponsored symposium entitled Queer
Beats will be held in conjunction with the de Young Museum
exhibition “Beat Culture and the New America 1950-1965.”
This is the first conference dedicated to exploring the relationship
between (homo)sexuality and Beat aesthetics. In a series of panel
discussions and readings, academic experts and Beat poets as well
as painters will address a range of writers and topics from Allen
Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs to Beat identity, sexuality, feminism,
censorship, degeneracy, scatology and the aesthetic of scuzziness.
