WORKSHOPS
JOURNAL WRITING
For women who want to develop their writing
skills. Through a variety of techniques the work-
shop will focus on development of individual
writing skills, including dreamwork, clustering,
and creating one’s own writing style. Using the
journal for creativity, problem solving, self-
images, self-esteem, dream analysis and . . . will
be explored.
8 week Intensive Beginning Thursday, October
October I1, 1984
Pre-registration required. Limited to first twenty
registrants.
Room 207 = 7-9 p.m.
Fee: $15.00 per person
Bring paper pens/ pencils.
Facilitator: Mieke Lia a lesbian feminist writer
currently working on her first novel.
SELF DEFENSE FOR WOMEN
Designed to enpower women and enable us to be
safe and fight back when necessary for self pro-
tection.
Six week training for total of 12 hours. Begin-
ning Saturday, October 13, 1984. Pre-registra-
tion is required. Limited to first ten registrants.
Room 113 1-3 p.m.
Fee: $25.00 for series
Wear comfortable clothing.
Facilitator: Debbie McBride a longtime lesbian
activist who is a trained instructor. Debby has
trained with the L.A. Commission in Assaults
Against Women has six years of experience in
martial arts and has a Black Belt in karate. She
has been on the staff of the Lesbian News for ten
years. This number of hours would normally
cost $60.00.

OF CONTROL???
Do you and your lover argue over who’s in con-
trol in your relationship? Over who makes deci-
sions? Do your disagreements lead to verbal or
physical abuse or are you afraid that they will?
This group provides a safe, supportive, and con-
fidential space in which to explore these issues.
A presentation and discussion will be held in
Room 203 on Tuesday, October 9, 1984 from
8-10 pm. If you are not sure whether your rela-
tionship problems fit in this setting please attend
the October 9th presentation to gather more
information, but also pre-register for the group
as registration is limited. No fee for this night!
Ten week series beginning Tuesday
October 16, 1984
Pre-registration required. Number of partici-
pants limited. For intake call 464-7400 Ext. 205.
Fee: Sliding fee scale.
Room to be given at time of intake. 8-10 p.m.
Facilitators are lesbian counselors with exten-
sive experience with relationships and power
issues.

A NOTE ON FEES: These are difficult econo-
mic times for everyone, the Center included. All
groups are designed to be financially self-sus-
taining. No one, however, will be turned away
due to inability to pay. Those who wish to pay
more to help their sisters may due so. Checks
should be maid payable to GLCSC-LESBIAN
CENTRAL.

SELF HELP
HEALTH SERIES
SELF EXAM
Designed for women who want to gain the abili-
ty to examine their own bodies and to distin-
guish the normal cycle changes from those that
indicate problems. Health workers will provide
hands on experience in use of speculums for
vaginal self exam and visualization of the cervix.
Books, tapes, and literature will be available for
purchase at the workshop as well as speculums.
One evening. Tuesday, October 2, 1984

Pre-registration required. Limited attendance.
Fee: $5.00
Facilitators: Healthworkers from the Feminist
Women’s Health Center. FWHC is a women
controlled community clinic dedicated to provi-
ding health care and information in a participa-
tory setting.
PRE-MENSTRUAL SYNDROME (PMS)
PMS is a hormonal disorder characterized by a
wide variety of emotional and physical symp-
toms that occur regularly at the same phase of
the menstrual cycle. Designed with a holistic
approach with emphasis on self help and a natu-
ral approach to thesyndrome. Each women will
learn about her particular type of PMS and gain
the tools to manage it in a four part program
including educational information, nutritional
guidance, exercise instruction, and emotional
factors.
Four week series. Beginning Tuesday
October 9, 1984
Pre-registration required. Limited attendance.
Fee: $20.00 for the series.

Facilitators: Tracy Carlis MA DTR and Sharon
Palmer PA. Both women trained at the PMS
Health Center in Encino with Dr. Shalen and
Dr. Reiss who are recognized as leading authori-
ties on the subject.
HERBS FOR HEALTH AND MAGIC
Herbs have been used to heal, cure, and for their
magical properties in all periods of human histo-
ry. This ancient science has enjoyed a new popu-
larity in the growing natural healing field. This
workshop will cover the identification and pro-
per preparation of herbs, the various uses of
herbs in healing, the use of herbs as meditation
aids, and for psychic development.
One evening. Saturday, October 13, 1984
Room 113 — 8-10 p.m.
Fee: $5.00
Facilitator: Lhyvy Oakwoman who has presented
workshops on various aspects of Self Healing. A
former manager of the Feminist Wicca, the first
matriarchal women’s center.
MEDITATION
Meditation is basic for all spiritual and psychic
development. With continuous use meditation
rests the mind and is an excellent tool for many
kinds of problem solving. This workshop will
demonstrate a simple and comfortable method
of meditation anyone can use, focusing and
visualization with guided imagery. The use of
music and other aids to relaxation will be pre-
sented and the use of meditation in healing.
Wear comfortable clothing.

Facilitator: Lhyvy Oakwoman has presented
various workshops on aspects of Women’s
Spirituality, Astrology and the Politics of Spiri-
tuality since 1976. Her published works include
articles in The Holy Book of Women’s Myste-
ries, a regular astrology article in Thermophoria.

GROUPS
LESBIAN MOTHER’S SUPPORT GROUP
Designed to provide support for Lesbian
mother’s and to provide an opportunity for their
children to meet, share, and gain support from
other children of Lesbians. Group frequently has
social gatherings with their parents and children.
Issues of parenting skills and problems unique to
lesbian mothers are addressed.
Meets in Room 106 the first and third Monday
of the month. 7-9 p.m.
SPANISH SPEAKING SUPPORT GROUP
Designed to provide support for Spanish speak-
ing lesbians and a space for discussion around
issues of concern in Spanish. Group is planning
social activities for the Fall.
Meets in Room 106 the second and fourth
Monday of the month. 7-9 p.m.
GRUPO DE APOYO DE HABLA
ESPANOL
Desenado para proporcionar apoyo para la Les-
biana de habla espanol y lugar para discuciones
sobre temas en Espanol que nos afectan. El
grupo planea actividades sociales para el otono.
Se reunen enel salon numero 106 cada segundo y
cuarto lunes de caca mes. 7 a las 9 p.m.
LESBIAN PROFESSIONALS
Designed to provide a support group for lesbian
professionals. Range of topics developed by the
group to meet their individual and collective
needs. Meets in Room 106 the second and fourth
Wednesday of the month. 7:30-9 p.m.
LESBIANS WITH DISABILITIES
Designed to provide support for lesbians with
disabilities and a space to explore the relation-
ship(s) with their lifestyle as well as other issues
of concern.
Meets in room 106 the first and third Wednesday
of the month. 7:30-9 p.m.
YOUNG LESBIANS SUPPORT GROUP
Designed to provide a support group for the
young lesbian (under 22). A space in which issues
relevant to the group and the problems they en-
counter can be shared. Social activities may be
planned by this group.
Meets in Room 106 every Friday. 6-7:30 p.m.
TRAINING SEMINAR
FACILITATOR TRAINING
A training seminar specifically designed to en-
able women to facilitate rap and or support
groups in LESBIAN CENTRAL.
The day’s training will include an introduction
to facilitating, sample raps facilitated by partici-
pants followed by a discussion focussing on con-
structive critiqueing. Lesbians of color and les-
bians with disabilities are especially encouraged
to register.
New facilitators will co-facilitate with an experi-
enced facilitator for 2-3 raps before soloing.

tember 10th.
Room 106 1! a.m.-4 p.m.
Facilitators: Two of the current rap group facili-
tators will provide the training along with Susan
Schreiber a will know therapist in ourcommuni-
ty.
SPECIAL EVENT
A special event is in the planning stages for
NOVEMBER 24 and 25. Watch for announce-
ment in the NOVEMBER issue of LESBIAN
NEWS.
