SPEAKING THE VISION
The Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center
AN EVENING WITH
MORRIS KIGHT
DON KILHEFNER
One of the most
important institutional
legacies of the American
gay liberation movement is
Los Angeles’ Gay and Les-
bian Community Services
Center. Morris Kight and
Don Kilhefner played cen-
tral roles in founding and
developing the Center into
the largest and most suc-
cessful organization of its
kind in the world. In the
process, they helped to
inspire and move a whole
generation of gay people.
In a rare and unique
evening, Morris and Don
will talk about the inner
and outer visions which
motivated/motivates
them, the laying of the
foundation on which the
Center grew, and the
struggles and controversies
surrounding its growth.
In an uncommonly
frank and heartfelt recount-
ing and reporting to gay
people, they will also be
assessing the vision and
spirit of gay liberation
today. This truth-telling
< will address such questions
sas “Where were we?”
“Where are wer” “Where
are we going?” “Whois tak-
; ing us there and why?”
AT THE CENTER, 1973
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7 at 8 p.m.
Hall A in Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Blvd.
West Hollywood (available parking) — Admission $5 (no one turned away)
MORRIS KIGHT was recently called “the elder statesman of the gay community” by the Los Angeles Times. Since
1937 he has been involved in a variety of causes and concerns including the environment, cultural arts, poverty,
peace and civil rights. In addition to being a pioneer gay liberationist and a founder and past president of GLCSC,
Morris is also a founder of Christopher Street West, Van Ness Recovery House, Stonewall Democratic Club and
the McCadden Place Collection. He is currently the vice president of the Los Angeles County Human Relations
Commission.
DON KILHEFNER is a pioneer gay liberationist and a founder of GLCSC. In his 13 year history with the Center,
he served as its founding Executive Director (1970-77) and Deputy Executive Director for Programs (1981-84).
He has involved himself in all areas of his community, including the founding of the Van Ness Recovery House,
the country’s first residential treatment program for gay alcoholics and addicts. Since 1978 Don has also created
means by which to explore the dynamics of gay consciousness and spirituality, including the national radical faerie
movement. He is currently a Ph. D. candidate in clinical psychology.
Sponsored by TREEROOTS, a nonprofit organization
dedicated to reclaiming gay-centered spirit vision realizations.
