Photograph of roofing products, Southern California, 1932. "Certain-teed, We Sell Certain-teed Roofing And Asphalt Shingles" -- sign above products. "Red Mineral Surfaced, Major Standard Quality Roofing, Sufficient to cover 100 square feet of roof space. In materials used, in methods of manufacture, and in the service it will give, this roofing represents a real value. Nails and Lap Cement are packed in the core of each roll. Directions For Laying, In cold weather warm this Roofing. Unroll Roofing-innerside down, as shown. Lap end joints three inches - keep joints away from gable edge and stagger as shown in illustration. Overlap each sheet of roofing 2 inches. Space nails 2 inches apart. Sheathing boards must be clean, dry and free from knot holes. They must be nailed firmly to rafters and brought closely together. Cement all laps carefully - make water-tight jints everywhere. Lay Roofing so that water runs over joints, not against them. Drive nails with care - if one is driven into an opening or crack, it will cause a leak unless the damage is repaired by withdrawing nail and filling hole with plastic cement. Avoid unnecessary walking on Roofing. Lay valleys, ridges, hips and flashing as illustrated above.
