Description
Photograph of an exterior view of Smith W. Osterhout house in Pasadena, ca.1910. The two-story house can be seen in the background at left on the edge of a hill. A covered balcony can be seen on the second floor of the building, and two chimneys can be seen on the roof. A wide dirt road can be seen leading up to the house in the foreground, and the city of Pasadena can be seen in a valley in the background at right. Several trees can be seen in the foreground at right. Additional information: "The home is clearly situated on the crest of a hill, with a view of homes below. This is Terrace Drive. A number of Victorian homes were built there in the 1880s, later replaced by more elegant mansions. This home is that of Smith W. Osterhout (b. 9-30-1851). The address was 143 Terrace Drive. Immediately south was a home at 153 Terrace Drive belonging to a G. Roscoe Thomas. The Frederick J. Woodbury home was north of the Osterout home, at 133 Terrace Drive (later shown as 125 Terrace in city directories). Unique among the homes on the crest of the hill overlooking Terrace Drive, the Osterhout home is depicted with a driveway running from South Orange Grove to Terrace Drive, just south of the Osterhout home. On November 20, 1886, The Pasadena Daily Union reported that there were plans for an "eight room residence on Orange Grove for W.S. Osterhout." On March 30, 1887, the Pasadena Daily Star stated that "S.W. Osterhout, on Orange Grove avenue, has the plans now in the hands of Ridgway & Stewart, architects, for a home which will rank among the handsomest in the "colony."
After Mr. Osterhout died on December 2, 1888, his widow continued to live in the home until it was sold in August of 1907. On August 3, 1907, The Pasadena Daily News had a story about the sale. "HOME PLACE IS PURCHASED – Residence of Mrs. Osterhout at No. 143 Terrace Drive Changes Owners – F.C. ROCKWELL IS REPORTED BUYER – Affords One of Most Beautiful Residence Sites in Pasadena"...
"…The house is a large ten-room frame residence situated on the crest of the hill which overlooks Terrace Drive, and is an imposing structure. …The lot is one of the finest home sites in the city, overlooking all that portion to the east, and affording one of the best views of mountains to the north and east in Pasadena. It has a frontage of nearly 103 feet on Terrace drive …"
The home was later demolished, and another residence constructed the site in 1924" -- Mr. Kirk Meyers, 2016-08-16.
