Description
Photograph (streetscape; horizontal photography) of the residence of Daniel Murphy, 2076 West Adams Street, ca.1910 (later demolished). The 2-story Spanish-style or Mediterranean-revival structure has a tile roof and 16 awning-covered windows in front. The paved driveway curves up in front of the house from the left around the lawn. A low hedge separates the property from the sidewalk. Another higher hedge surrounds the facade of the house. Two trees are visible in the front yard.; "Noted pioneer taken by death: Archbishop Cantwell will officiate at requiem for Daniel Murphy, 83 -- Daniel Murphy, 83-year-old business pioneer who was instrumental in the growth of three Southland communities, died yesterday at his home, 2076 W. Adams Blvd. -- Archbishop John J. Cantwell will officiate tomorrow at 10 a.m. as solemn high mass is celebrated for the veteran in St. Vibiana's Cathedral. In addition to his buisiness activities, Murphy participated in many philanthropies and in 1931 received from Pope Pius XI the title of Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. -- A native of Hazelton, Pa., Murphy came to Southern California in the early '70's. Following service here with the Southern Pacific Railroad, he transferred his interests to Needles on the California-Arizona boundary. -- Before returning to Los Angeles he established a large mercantile business, opened a bank, helped lay out the townsite and established a chain of refrigerating plants. -- He later organized the Brea Canon Oil Co.".... -- Newspaper clipping (1939).
