Description
Photograph of the exterior view of the Broadway Hotel in the Wilson Block, 1910. Adjacent stores include millinery, piano and a window advertisement for "Prof. C. Irvin Althouse, Scientific Palmist". The four-story building has projected windows similar to cant windows except with a box shape. The façade, from the second floor and up, is symmetric. The first floor consists of little shops, each with unique window displays and decorations. A man is working with his bucket near a lamppost (lower right). Several bicycles are parked along the dirt road.; Legible signs include: "[...]el Meyer", "Hotel Catalina", "rockery and glassv[...]", "[...] and [...]aurant [...] lies", "439, Pacific Music Co.", "Steck Pianos", "Wheeler & Wilson, ladies and children's wear, sewing machines", "Le Sage Shoes", "sample shoe sale", "Le Sage Bro", "E.P. Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
