Photograph of a view of Broadway, looking north from Seventh Street, ca.1917. The are many tall commercial buildings on the visible blocks. Notable buildings include the Bullocks department store building (left), the Bank of Italy (right), the California Furniture Co. (center) and the Walter P. Story/Mullen & Bluett Clothing Co. building (center left). Early-model cars are parked along the curb or moving down the street. Streetcars carrying passengers are moving on its rails down the street. Pedestrians are can be seen traveling on the sidewalks or crossing the streets.; Legible signs include: "Bank of Italy, resources over $40,000,000", "S. Broadway", "W. Seventh St.", "644, 646, California Furniture Co., Globe-Werniche, sectional bookcases, high in quality, low in price", "costumes, Goldstein Co. Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
