Description
Photograph of North Broadway from Hall of Justice steps, 1920-1939. In the extreme foreground at right, a round set of stone steps can be seen. To the left, a wide sidewalk is visible extending into the background. In the background at left, a line of automobiles can be seen parked against the curb of the sidewalk. A paved road is visible further to the left, and a large building with several covered awnings above the windows can be seen on the opposite side of the street. To the far right, a palm tree can be seen beside a lamppost and a wooden bench. Additional lampposts are visible alongside utility poles parallel to the street. In the extreme background at left, another large building is visible.; 200 Block North Broadway, taken from the steps of the Hall of Justice. Mora's Original Grill, Inc., 233-235 N. Broadway, "Speghetti and Ravioli Dinners a Specialty". 3 Bail Bond Agencies, steps on right to hall of justice. North on Broadway from Temple, Christie's Coffee Shop, 225 N. Broadway.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
