The jagged stone pilings of the breakwater can be seen snaking out from the right foreground, bowing out to the left, and returning right to meet up with the island, which is pcitured at center. To the left, a wharf can be seen faintly in the distance, running across the width of the image.; Earlier record reads: "The San Pedro Breakwater looking south from Cabrillo Beach toward Dead Man's Island, 29 January 1870. Or, view of main channel of the Port of Los Angeles looking north over the American President Line Terminal, 29 January 1870. Wilmington can be seen in the distance to the right; the San Gabriel Mountains to the north of downtown Los Angeles".
