Description
Photograph of the exterior view of the old Federal Building and Post Office, Temple Street and Main Street, ca.1912. The five-story corner building has a facade facing diagonally across the intersection. Two lampposts flank the main entrance where above it stands a sculpture of an eagle. Above the first two floors and recessed into the building are two columns that flank three windows. The lowest window has an ornamental pediment above it. Similar architecture can be found around the building. Balustrades enclose the perimeter around the roof. A buggy and an early-model car are parked on the street in front of the building. There is a newsstand next to the right entrance. People are traversing the streets.; Legible signs include: "Franklin Printing Co.", "your home papers here", "drink Coca-[cola]", "[...]e cigar", "[...], Luna Park, free, Aug. 14, Nelson", "Pantages, 8 all star acts, [...]". Additional Information: Originally, the photograph was dated by 1908. Nevertheless, according to the LA Times from Sept. 24, 1910, Page III-4, the Federal Building and Post Office was preparing to begin moving tenants into the new structure at that time, whereas this photo shows that it was already open for business.
