CHILDHOOD AND YOUTH
Rev. Eskijian was born in Urfa (Edessa), not very far from
Cilicia, in central Turkey, on February 23, 1862. His father was
a hunble cobbler, His father's name was Saris 2ekyaw
His mother was called Marian Najarian - Eskijian, Marian was
the sister of Rev, Vartan Najarian.
The family was poor but there was a genuine Christian cons-
ciousness and spiritual life in the fanily. Peace, contentment,
cleanliness and orderliness were the characteristics of the
fanily.
Hovhaness was the younger of two sons. His elder brother was
called Guiragos.
During the Massacres of 1895 - 6*
In 1895, when Hovhannes was merely 13 years old,the Turkish
Massacres took place also in Urfa. Turkish hordes attacked homes,
shops and churches, to plunder but specially to kill.
Sonn
Father(Eskijian was killed in a horrendous way. They Turks
cut his throat.
Hovhannes took refuge in a ditch without water with some other
men and women, anong whom also Mrs, Feride Daghlian. Fortunately
somebody closed the opening of the ditch with some material, so
that they remained unnoticed,
The group remained in the ditch hungry and thirsty for two
days, until the wave of the massacres subsided.
The young Hovhannes attracted the attention of Miss Corrine
Shattuck, the brave /merican Missionary in Urfa, and she took hin
in the American Orphanage in Urfa.
Hovhannes remained in the Orphanage until 1900 when he was
sent to the Central Turkey College in Aintab, Cilicia.
