Content that a country*s population is not always in agreement with the
policies of the ruling political forces. This was especially so in

the case of Aleppo where the strong governor had refused to comply

with the Enver-Talaat orders and he had left the Armenians of Aleppo
untouched.

I slumped in a corner of the carriage still doubting the intentions
of the driver , shaking like a leaf and unable ‘to relax. I was
constantly worried about by mother. When he stopped, I peeked out
carefully and saw a cross over a low steeple, evidently a church.

I thought, here at last I will find Rev. Eskijian and he will help me,
The coachman got out and I heard him talk to someone but he returned
soon and started to drive again. He went through some narrow streets
and what seemed a lifetime later stopped. Here, he said in Turkish,
here is the house. He helped me out of the carriage, glad to be rid
of such a motly passenger. Then he turned around and drove away.

There I was facing a high wad# with a closed gate in front of me.
‘There was no sign or sound of people hehind it. I gathered whatever
courage was yet in me and knocked at the gate with my two fists. The
gate opened what seemed by magic onto a courtyard. A few feet away
was a house. There were rooms, a balcony, and a pretty woman, young
and neatly dressed, She said, "Are you looking for Rev. Eskijian?”
She knew I was looking for him, Evidently I was not the first.
Evidently it had happened over and over again, But she didn't sound
annoyed or bored, instedd she explained gently, appologetically
as if she owed me an explanation. "I am sorry I can't ask you to
come in. You see, I have two small children and a horrible epidemic

of typhus is raging and I can*t take the chance of exposing them."
