some length in the , Forty Days of MasaDagh, so did many others but
they all softened the blow, the reality was much more harsh.

The forty days of Hadjin took me and my family to a camp on the
outskirts of Aleppo, burnt to a crisp from the August sun, hungry,
thirsty, tattered, bleeding, but alive. Anger had died within us long
before. It takes energy to be angry. Only the will to live was yet
alive.

‘The*camp" where hundreds of thousands had already been thrown
together was a narrow strip of the desert, surrounded by bare hills,
The hot, humid air was filled with the stench of human refuse and
decaying unburied bodies. I couldn't breathe, ‘oh, if I could only
take a deep breath! The name of this hell was Ghatma. “Dear Lord,

I hope there is no Ghatma in the hereafter, and if there is one,
forgive my sins and do not condemn me to it," I prayed.

Aleppo was 9 hours walk away. If we could only get to Aleppo.
If not the city itself, the other camps near it, maybe we would find
the remnants of civilization there. “Maybe faith, hope, and charity
are still alive somewhere. In the middle of the night, three days later,
I felt a hand on my shoulder. I recognized the contours of the face
in the dark. He was a friend. “ Naomi," he said, "we have engaged
some Arab villagers, they will supply us with some horses. We can not
ride but they will carry our belongings and let the old , sick and
small children ride. We will have to pay them every cent we have
left, but they will not give us away and they will lead us to Aleppo.

I could not leave without letting you know.”
