"Will you sit on the bench and try to be comfortable. The Reverend
should be coming pretty soon. It*s way passed the children's dinner
time." No sooner than the word "dinner time" was said, a little boy
about 23 -3 years old appeared dressed like a little Lord Fauntleroy
in knee length pants of a solid color and a tweed jacket a bit too
big for him, probably worn by his older bfother first. "Mother,
I am hungry now. Iam very hungry." He kept repeating it all the
time looking me over, trying to decide whether he should smile or not.
I then realized that I was doing something I hadn't done in months.
I was smiling to this boy and he was returning my smile.
Time spent in waiting is not twice as long, it is not ten times
as long it is endless. I.think that I should have tried to return
to the camp to reassure my mother that I was still alive and that my
pursuers had not harmed me. But I knew that would be impossible. I
did not know the way back, I would be recognized as an "escapee"
and captured long before I got out of the street. Besides the little
boy kept coming back to the balcony to attract my attention with some
kind of noise maker waving to me and smiling. I couldn*t disappoint
nim!
Finally just before darkness set in the gate opened and he walked
in, a young man, He couldn't have been over thirty-five, a handsome
man, with attractive dark eyes and fair complexion. But he was a
tired man, a very, very, very tired looking man. He turned to me and as
if he knew I would be there, he said, "I am sorry to be late. Have you
been waiting long? We had a very large load of children brought in
from the camp today. ‘They were all very sick with typhus and desentary.
They had to be cleaned, fed, and put to bed in the orphanage. There
was a shortage of clean cloths, bedding and medication. Anyways
