Suddenly out of nowhere came an announcement, streetcriers went
thru the city hollering, Hear Ye! Hear Yet All Armenian females of
exiled escapees will be exempt from further deportation and relatives
will be wards of the Ottaman Empire if they qualify to serve in
military hospitals. I first thought it was a trick to bring us out
from our hideouts and save them the trouble and expense of searching
for us, but the reverend informed us that Turkey had suffered a great
defeat in the "Sousthern front" at Jerusalem. Aleppo was the nearest
city large enough to be able to house and nurse the tremendous numbers
of wounded soldiers and officers. The Moslem women never showed their
faces to any mamber of the masculine sex except their father, brother
and husband let alone take care of a wounded soldier. Therefore they
had to make this deal with us the people they had sworn to wipe out
from the face of the earth. I decided to apply. By this time I was
17 but I was short, puny and looked much younger than 1?, They were
asking for 18 and over. But I relied on one asset that not too many
possessed. I could read and write Tarkish which was then written
in the Arabic alphabet. This time again without my mother's concent
or knowledge I went to the designated place, took a seat among other
applicants and waited my turn. It seemed my turn would never come
because the man who made the selections called those who were older,
bigger, and a little less starved and ematiated looking. Just as I
was giving up hope the outer door opened and a tall handsome officer
in medical doctors uniform entered the room, He cast an eye around the
occupants of the room, stopped when he came to me and ip a surprised,
rather sad voice said in Armenian, “Naomi, my child, what are you doing
here? How come you are not in school?" I recognized the wonderful
doctor who had cared for me thru measles, whooping cough, tonsilitis,
cuts and burises ever since I was ten years old and a boarding school

student in Istanbul. I told him my sad story, shamelessly sobbing my
