tears staining his snow white uniform. He offered his handkerchief

to me and: took me by the hand and led me to the inner room, His
recommendation was sufficient. doctor, even an armenian one was a
priceless commodity for the Turkish army at that time. I was acdepted,
given the precious priceless papers that would take me and my family’
out of the gutters into fresh air again.

Two days later I applied at the designated hospital and started
to work as a recorder of temperature, pulses, and comments from the
doctor, the nurses and the patients. When I reported my success to my
family my grandmother remarked, "So you are going to help them get well
again so that they can kill more Armenians." But when I asked Rev.
Eskijian's advice he said, "When pfis disciples asked Christ if they

should help their enemies as well as their friends, He told them the

parable of the Good Samaritan." He said, "Iadvise you to do likewise
So I continued to work at the hospital for wounded Turkish soldiers

until the end of the war. I was able to provide for my family not only
freedom from further persecution but also a measure of comfortable
living style, food, home, clothing, etc. During this period a warm
friendship, based on genuine affection and gratitude developed between
my mother and Mrs. Eskijian which became a gift from heaven for both
of them, The reverend finally succumbed to the deadly infection in the
third year of World War I. Kneeling by his grave 1 murmured, “I wish
I could have died in your place." tiy mother stood by his widow, like
blood kin, she didn't have any of her own there. She bed nursed himR
thru a long illness brought on more by heartbreak than anything else.
There she was, left alone in a cruel world with two small boys to feed,
to clothe, to protect or die in the attempt, and she almost did.
