There was a time in my life when I did not hope to live to become
eighteen, Now on the plus side of eighty years I keep thinking of
the times, the places, the incredible events and the God like man
who made that possible for me.
I was fifteen then. Happy, healthy, brighteyed, full of ambitious
plans for a long, useful life. Suddenly my world crashed around me, ~
my dreams went up in smoke, my clothes turned to rags.
Somewhere in the world some fool had pressed the trigger of-a
gun that had killed some country's prince. What did that have to
do with me? How was I responsible for it? Not I or any of my people
had any share of responsibility in it yet at the end of the World war
that it started, two million of my people had been killed in various
ways. Yet I was spared, I am still here at 81, grateful for my
life, my children, sorrowful for what I lost, I never stop wondering
“why me?"
I*11 never know the “why” but Iremember the "how". Turkey
entered the war on the side of Germany, against the European Allies
and later the Americans. ‘he official edict of the then Turkish
government went out to echo through the mountains and valleys, cities
and hamlets. “ve must create an Armenia without Armenians. We must
kill them all, man, woman, child, young and old, no exceptions
permitted, no mercy shown, no means ignored, no matter how cruel they
may seemt{’ The diabolical plan was to take first the young, the
strong, the heads of clans and families. Kill them outright or exile
them to some unknown destination without any tools of self-defense,
very little food and clothing or cover. Then follow up with the rest
of the population. Get them out of their homes, drive them out to the
deserts without food, shelter, transportation, or the help and protection
