My dear sister
Mrs. Esther Barsumian,
Thank God, at last we received with great joy your
letter which we had been longingly and so impatiently
waiting for. It's impossible for me to describe to you the
measure of our happiness that both Virginia's and your
letters, dated December 26 and 27, as well as the children's
photographs, brought to our extremely saddened hearts.
These past four months during which not a word was heard
from you, was even more difficult to bear than the entire
four years (the duration of the war). If only you had
written to us before you received our letters, your letters
would have arrived here at least 14 months earlier. Be that
as it may, as long as we have now received the good news of
the well-being of you all, we forgive you for all the
needless worry your tardiness caused us.
Today I am sending your letters and the photographs to
Aintab (to mother and family) who day and night have been
living through with bated breath, to the limit of their
endurance because they have not heard from you. Praise the
Lord, our agony has now turned to rejoicing. Last night
Lucia (sister Osanna's eldest daughter) and I did not go to
sleep. All night long we sat up and cried for joy. To
date, the number of letters Lucia and I have written to you
is 8. Here are 2 more (one from each of us). This makes
10. I can't understand why, even though I had mailed my
letters before Lucia, you did not get mine, but already you
have received hers. I hope mine did not get lost.
We didn't know that my brother George and his wife are
now in California. I had mailed ali his letters to your
address (to Oak Park). TI hope that you have forwarded all
of them to him. How about their work? Are George and Moses
and my brother-in-law (Girgi Enishte) in the same work? If
not, what are they doing? I wonder why Moses has not
married by now.
Sweet Virginia's informative letter, written in her
beautiful English, made us very happy. Her accomplishments
attest to her maturity and dependability. after her
graduation from high school and college, I think you should
all consider coming back to Aintab---and soon. When all of
our Armenians, including you, our dear ones, return here,
you will have brought a bit of America to us so that there
will be no need for us to come there.
Now I shali give you news of our family. As you know,
we came here (to Aleppo) the year before Seferberlik
(Mobilization) began. Badveli came on September 19, and T
followed him 6 months later, on the 10th of April, 1914. T
had been here just 8 weeks when I came down with typhoid
fever. You already know this. No sooner had I gotten well
than the Seferberlik was announced. And exactly a month
later Badveli got sick with typhoid fever. He recovered
