Content "The deportations of 1915 opened vast avenues of
service before Rev. Eskijian. Aleppo was the
crossroads on the highway of deportation. Thousands of
Armenians were brought in to be deported to the
slaughter houses of Deir Zor, Ras ul Ain, Sheddade and
elsewhere to die of starvation and fatigue. The vast
khans and factories of Aleppo were filled with refugees
and emptied to be filled again by newcomers,
persecuted, half-naked and starving. Rev. and Mrs.
Eskijian were busy every day with these people. Not
only did they welcome many of these Armenians into
their own home, but also served them outside their home
in many hiding places. They administered food,
medicine, money and protection to their utmost
capacity.

He obtained financial assistance from different
sources, including the American Embassy in Aleppo which
was transmitted to the needy with Father Harutune
Yayian of the Armenian Apostolic Diocese.

He found employment for many boys, girls and young
women as servants in different Arab families. His
motto was, "We must do all we can do to save one more
Armenian by all possible means."

He found employment for many young Armenians with the
German Railroad Company, opening tunnels for the
Berlin-Baghdad railway in the Amanos mountains near
Entelly.

The more dangerous the situation the more energetic
and courageous he became.

He sent quinine and financial assistance to Armenian
refugees in Hama, Homs, Damascus, Hauran, even Deir
Zor, Meskene, Ras ul Ain. His agents were Armenians
disguised as Arabs who talked Arabic. He had many
coworkers who had contacts with Arab and Turkish
officials and Arab drivers and muleteers. One of his
important helpers was a chief police officer, by the
Selim Effendi, an Albanian by origin. He himself
defended many families hidden in and around the
Armenian Evangelical Church. Whenever there was a plan
for official investigation of the refugees, he informed
Rev. Eskijian a day ahead of time, so that he could
change the hiding places.
