from that in 3 months. December came and went. In January
1915, he again came down with the same iliness. For 3
months he remained between life and death. Finally the Lord
showed mercy on him and spared his life. He returned, as it
were, from death to life.
At once Aleppo became a center for refugees. From
every direction, survivors poured into the city. Some went
on through while others stayed. To describe the chaotic
condition of the city, I would have to write a book and send
it to you, but even that vould not be enough.
At such a time of political turmoil, unable to do
anything else, everyone was trying to come out of it alive
But my dear Badveli, barely out of bed from his sickness
disregarding the personal hardships and peril to his own
life, relentiessly labored day and night to save other
lives. Together we pressed ourselves to the very limit of
our endurance. All our time, energy, effort, sleep, food
clothing , and other material posessions we put on the line
in behalf of this wretched, miserable mass of torn and
battered humanity.
(Most of the words in this next paragraph are written
illegibly in the original, thus making it virtually
impossible to render them into meaningful sentences.)
had to prepare replies to 15-20 letters, at the same time
find ways and means to transport urgently needed supplies
and subsistence without delay to the refugees in all the
various sections of the city. Even if one's body were made
of iron, the degree of pressure under which he worked would
be enough to cause a complete physical breakdown---let alone
the terrible typhus that year which killed off about 200
stricken people a day. The disease finally caught up with
him, attacking his weakened and vorn out body while he was
absorbingly and painfully involved day and night at his
post. Despite the services of a highly skilled physician
(Dr. Altoonian) and the medical treatment he received, on
the 14th day of his hospitalization he finally went to be
with the Lord. It will be exactly 3 years on March 25. How
we survived after his departure is another story which will
have to remain untold until my next letter.
At this time, the children are doing all right, but I'm
not at all well. Grief and sorrow devastated all of us.
Our life expectancy from here on is perhaps 5 to 10 years
Mother, Victoria, Nouritza with her 2 boys, Yacoub, his
wife, and his 2%-year-old son are all alive and well. They
all send their selams to you. The money that you promised
me (when it arrives) T intend to send to the folks, as they
are in dire need. Right now, thank God, I'm not that
desperate. Sister Rahel and her family (minus her husband
are yet on the plains of Amuk. ‘They will be returning to
Aintab shortly. In 2 months we will be going also.
he
With much love to you all,
Gulenia
