Eskijian's questions. He looked like a statue with eyes fixed
at a point. His condition seemed to be very serious and we were
afraid not knowing what the trouble was and what was to be done.
After staying motionless for about 15 minutes, he suddenly
burst into tears crying and sobbing aloud. We left him alone to
weep. After quieting down, he left us. We did not know where
he was going, neither thought it wise to follow him. It was not
very long before he returned with two lattle children under each
arm. Calling Mrs. Eskijian, he asked her to clean and feed them.
Again he went away, and with three such trips he brought six
children.
Soon we understood the cause of his abnormal state of mind.
That day, late in the afternoon, he had visited one of these
houses of industry where the workers had not stopped for a few
days to pick up the dead. He saw quite a number of dead mothers
and small children lying beside some of them. Looking closely,
he discovered that the mothers were all dead but some of the
children still had life in them. Evidently these mothers fed
their children with all they had and died of starvation, but their
children, though near death, were still alive. When Rev. Eskijian
saw these small children clinging to their dead mothers, his nerves
were shattered, his mind was frozen, and his whole physical system
was grief stricken. It was these little children that he had
brought home for Mrs. Eskijian to clean and feed.
The children were filthy and badly infested with hundreds
of lice. They were taken to the church yard where Mrs. Eskijian,
with several other helpers, tried to clean them and feed them with
