FACING DEATH WITH TRIUMPH
ROSE ALTIC
‘Among the first guests who came to welcome the new missionary to Syria more
than a year ago, was a respected old brother, Harootune Baba (father). As a mem-
ber of the Beirut church committee, his warm handshake and words of welcome
helped to convey to her a feeling of fellowship with her new co-workers,
‘About twenty-five years ago, this Armenian’s heart and life were freed from the
bonds of formal Protestantism by the transforming power of the blood of Jesus
Chijst During the neriods of wars and. massacres. hie. was aiving-examnle-of what
Gou'sgrace can do for His own. With lis fellow’ people, he suffered persecution,
Joss of material things and was exiled at the hands of merciless Turks, By his con-
tinued devotion to God, he has increased in knowledge of the Word and of his Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ, Now at his eightieth milestone he was a ripened Christian
Character waiting to go home, His Christian life has not been unfruitful. His noble
example has resulted in the conversion of his five children and their faies, Hay,
ing an understanding spirit and a common sympathy in the cause, Baba was a
fafinful confidant and counsellor to the missionary and the Armenian workers.
During the past few months, disease and infirmity fastened themselves upon this
temple of clay, during which time Baba had visions of his eternal home. His spirit
tial senses were not benumbed by drugs, thus God's people were privileged to share
the precious experiences of this saint as he approached the dread monster death
In these visions he beheld two rivers, one as the river of life and the other as the
river of death. Beyond the direct course of the river of death an innumerable host
could be seen praising God, Their countenance shone with such splendor that hi
feves were dazzled and he could not continue to look upon the scene. Approaching
the earth in the river of death were stormy billows and tempestuous waves, but
near this host of redeemed souls all was peaceful and calm, By the winding tiver
of life were walls of red and sky blue. On its banks were growing trees, the magni-
tude and beauty of which he had not seen in this world, We rejoiced with this
‘Armenian saint as he faced death havin no ear, with, aconqueror's, tread and.
victorious triumph, God's glory was revealed to him verifying this hope,
“If for Christ T proclaim the glad story
I I seek for Hit sheep kone astray
Tam sure He will show me His glory.
When T've gone the last mile of the way.”
‘Armenian Christmas eve, he reached the last mile of the way, and God gaye His
‘an abundant entrance into heaven, It was his privilege to spend Christmas
day with the redeemed ones. The announcement of his Homegoing to the Beirut
church brought joy, althou member feels Kenly the vacancy in our midst,
‘The funeral service was an inspiration to all believers to more zealously follow the
Lord and an invitation to sinners to come to the Saviour.
