were huddling around them to keep their nakedness from the eyes
of the onlookers. Rev. Eskijian was unprepared to cope with this
strange situation. However, he and the helper with him took off
their jackets to cover two of these young ladies, and managing
to cover the rest of them with any old thing he could put his
hand on, brought them to his home. Immediately, gowns were made
for them for temporary use until proper clothing could be supplied.
Thus, the care of daily increasing number of refugees was growing
to be a problem for Rev. Eskijian, tiring him tremendously.
There were certain houses of industry in Aleppo which were
vacated because of the war. The government used to place the
refugees temporarily in these houses to be processed before being
deported further south. During the few days they stayed in these
houses, a good many of these refugees used to die because of
fatigue, exhaustion and hunger. The government had hired workers
who were supposed to make daily calls to these houses of industry
and haul the dead with horse drawn carts to large public dumps to
be covered. Rev. Eskijian used to make frequent rounds to these
houses and try to help the refugees in every way he could.
One day, at about 5:30 P.M., he returned home and sat on
a chair. He seemed to be unusually sad and in a pensive mood.
He would not speak neither answer questions. He would not even
care for the childish approach of his two little children and
would not let them come near him. Mrs. Eskijian had prepared
the supper and forced him to come to the table. She wanted him
to ask the blessing, but he did not respond. Then she asked me
