them were molested and others taken into Turkish harems, ete. His
sympathetic heart used to melt by listening to numerous such heart
crushing experiences which were too hard on his nerves. He could
not rest without providing some sort of temporary physical rest
and spiritual comfort for their bleeding heart with a message
from the scriptures to place their trust in God.
Some of these Armenian deported people from the inner states
of Turkey were transported by freight trains which used to pass
through Aleppo. In those days, a proclamation was issued that
Protestant refugees should not be deported further than Aleppo.
Making good use of this permission, Rev. Eskijian used to meet
every incoming train at the station and going through the wagons
he used to pick up the children, the young girls and the young
women, also men, if there were any, protestant or non-protestant,
regardless of their church affiliation and bring them into town.
These refugee trains did not run on regular schedule. There-
fore, Rev. Eskijian's ears always had to be attentive to the whistle
of trains so that he might rush to the station immediately upon
hearing it. The whistle of night trains used to serve as an alarm
clock to awaken him from his much needed sleep.
One day, around lunch time, hearing the whistle, he ran out
of the house, and jumping into a horse drawn carriage rushed to
meet the train. As he walked through the freight cars which were
jammed with refugees, he noticed a group of women huddled together
in a strange manner. When he approached them, he saw a few scantily
clad young ladies sitting on the floor of the wagon and these women
