Kessab 1941-1946,
Origins: In older times the area was called Casabella,
hence the abbreviated name Kessab which is situated on the
slopes of Cassius Mountain, 12 kilometers from the Eastern
Mediterranean coast line. It sits at an attitude of 800 meters
(2.788 ft), while the Majestic Cassius Mountain is 1,800
meters (5,904 ft.) above sea level. According to historical
documents several Roman emperors including Hadrian and
Julian the Apostate climbed this mountain to the top. The
first few settlers in Kessab were Armenian refugees, escaping
the Seljuk Turkish invasions. During the 14th century. to

today, one or two Armenian villages remain, which could be
said to be the legacy of Cilician Armenia, notably Kessab,
in Northeastern Syria”
Prior to 1914, in the district there were twelve villages
and hamlets, Kessab being the central town. Total popula-

Percent were Armenian Evangelicals. Spoken language was
Vernacular (A melange of Armenian, Turkish, and Arabic).
Kessabtsies’ livelihood was rather marginal, causing some
of them to migrate to other countries, mostly to the U.S.A.
to find jobs.
