Photograph of streetcars on Hill Street looking north from Fifth Street in Los Angeles, ca.1924. A long line of streetcars is moving down tracks on Hill Street, and another streetcar is passing on an intersecting street. Many automobiles are parked along the paved roads, and dozens of pedestrians are visible on the concrete sidewalks. Several tall buildings, including two buildings over seven stories high are visible on the sides of the roads. A tree can be seen in the foreground at left.; Legible signs include, from left to right: "Douglas Fairbanks The Thief of Bagdad", "Littles", "Los Angeles School of Optometry Eye Clinic", "Venice", "Slow", "Stop", "Absolutely Fireproof", "Schofield Engineering-Construction Company Constructing Engineers", "Los Angeles Ideal Office Building", "405 So. California Historical Society Collection, 1860-1960
Description
The California Historical Society Collection is incomparable for the documentary picture it provides of the growth of Southern California, particularly the development of the Los Angeles region, between 1860 and 1960. The collection contains more than 25,000 photographs. The full archive was placed on long-term deposit at USC in 1990 and includes the Title Insurance and Trust Company Collection, also known as TICOR, and the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection.
