He further says,•By 1823 · there were not to exceed twenty", and he proceeds to give a list of the ranchos and the names of the parties to whom the grants 29 were made. But it will be noted that some of these were granted as late as 1822 and consequently cannot, in fact, be called "Spanioh grants" since they were granted during revolutionary days. Bancroft questions whether one or two of these were ever really granted, for instance, ~1m1? 0 At any rate few were intact as grant~d at the time of the American conquest. December 18, 1855, Julio Verdu o sold to Joseph L. rent a tract of land. a part of the rancho along the Loa Angeles RivP-r, called at the time and since the "Santa ulalia" - tract, containing 6?1.oO acres.
