Description
Photograph of a view of Broadway looking south from Fifth Street, Los Angeles, 1928. The eight-story highrise of the Title Guarantee Building stands prominently to the left of Broadway, with the Broadway Arcade Building visible five buildings into the distance. Automobiles and pedestrians navigate the road, with three people visible standing at left, in the middle of the street, one of them reading a newspaper. A clock hung above the entrance to the Title building reads roughly ten minutes after one o'clock. Legible signs include: "Shopping Upstairs Finest Specialty Shops Upstairs", "Power Off", "United Cigars", "Marlboro Cigarettes for 20¢", "Hamilton's", "Kodak", and "Tait's". The photograph features following buildings: Title Guarantee Company Building (built in 1912), large building on immediate left; Forve-Pettebone Building (Built circa 1905), next south; Tait's Coffee Shop (1922-1931; formerly Quinn's Superba Theater - 1914-1922), next south; Cameo Theater (1924-1991; formerly Clune's Broadway Theater - 1910-1924), next south; Pantages Theater - Broadway (1910-1992 - years active as theater), next south; Broadway Arcade Building, next south; Silverwoods Building (built in 1921), at north-east corner with 6th Street; Walter P. Story Building (built in 1910), on south-east corner with 6th Street; Palace Theater (opened June 26, 1911, as Orpheum), midblock south of Story building.
