Description
Photograph of a postcard showing an exterior view of a "new" Dutch Colonial-style house in Oakland, California, ca.1904. At center, the two-story home is pictured turned slightly to the left, steps leading up to its brick porch while a long extension of the home stretches behind the gambrel roof. Handwritten transcription from back of postcard read: "Mr. E.C. Shipley, 744 East 8th St., Los Angeles, Cal.". Typed transcription read: "post card", "the address to be written on this side", "place 1-cent stamp here". Additional information: The house is still extant (as of August 2019). It's located at the southeast corner of 31st Street and West Street in Oakland, California. It was the home of one of E.C. Shipley's daughters. Originally numbered 709 at the 31st Street, the house is currently (August 2019) numbered 729 at the same street.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
