Description
Photograph of a portrait of General John Augustus Sutter, ca.1850-1880. He can be seen from the chest up with his shoulders turned slightly to the right. He is balding but has thick hair on the sides of his head and long sideburns. He has a large moustache and a small soul patch below his lips. He is wearing a suit with vest and an ascot. His efforts in establishing a fort for trade near what later became Sacramento were crucial to the formation of a colony in California. He lived from 1803-1880. Half-tone print of a portrait.
