Description
Photograph of an rail car at top of the ore dump at mine run by Free Gold Mining Company, Hedges (later Tumco), Imperial County, California, ca.1905. A wooden frame supports the rails on the steeply sloped structure. Below are a small wood building and wooden bins for temporary ore storage. A man sits on the ground next to the railroad tracks which run next to the mechanical workings beneath the bins. Further back and to the right is another building with a covered porch. The mountain slopes up to the right.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
