Description
Photograph of a portrait of a Walapai Indian woman basket maker, Kingman, Arizona, ca.1900. She is sitting in front of two Indian blankets, both striped (the upper horizontal, the lower vertical), hung behind her on a wooden wall. She is wearing a long fine patterned skirt, with stripes around the hem, a plaid shirt under a dark shawl or blanket, with a stripe around the edge, around her shoulders, and many beaded necklaces around her neck. In her lap between her hands is a large ornate basket. She wears a ring on one of the fingers of her right hand. Her long dark hair has bangs cropped straight across and hangs down to her chest. Her face is painted. The basket's lid(?) lays at left, propped against the side of her seat.
