Description
Photograph of the University of Southern California, College of Medicine, north Broadway, Los Angeles, ca.1890. The 3-story wooden slat building has a broad set of steps which lead up to the covered main entry. The grassy yard in front is small and several small bushes are growing next the the building. A 2-story building is visible behind (at right) and a very small building is visible next door (at left). Utility lines string across the top of the image. Lettering at the top of the College reads: "USC College of Medicine". A sign on a pole in the sidewalk near the main entry reads: "Cars stop here". Three or four men are lounging on the porch.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
