Description
Photograph of a portrait of General John Augustus Sutter, ca.1850-1880. He can be seen from the waist up with his head turned slightly to the left. He is balding but has thick hair on the sides of his head. He has a large moustache and a small soul patch. He is wearing a double-breasted military uniform with epaulettes. He is holding the blade of his sabre in his left hand and a cylindrical object in his right hand. His efforts in establishing a fort for trade near what later became Sacramento were crucial to the formation of a colony in California. He lived from 1803-1880.
